#CreepyMessages: “I see you like Game of Thrones. Do you also like incest?”

Welcome to the first post in my #CreepyMessages series. In this series, I’ll be sharing some positively disturbing messages and texts I’ve received from men, as well as some submitted by readers.

The first, and most disturbing message I’ve ever received was over OkCupid a couple years ago. On my profile, I mentioned that I’m into Game Of Thrones. Who isn’t? I like it when men go the extra mile of finding things that we’re both interested in, rather than just looking at my pictures and then sending me some generic one-liner.

But this guy took it one step further… read the message below:

“you seem really interesting and openminded. i’d like if you review my profile and personality questions and see if you’d be interested in chatting with me.

ps–i love Dune! i haven’t read Game of Thrones but well aware of them from the author (i have some of his rare short stories). i’m curious what you think about the … um … close family relationships between some of the characters. if we were to marry someday, just how openminded would you be about what our family can do in the privacy of our home?”

Yes that’s an actual thing someone wrote me. There’s a lot to unpack here, but let’s start from the top.

“i’d like if you review my profile and personality questions and see if you’d be interested in chatting…”

It’s like a message from a job recruiter, first of all. How about talking to me like a normal person?

“…i haven’t read Game of Thrones but well aware of them from the author (i have some of his rare short stories).”

What? I’m supposed to be impressed because you’re some sort of George R.R. Martin short story connoisseur, but you haven’t read Game of Thrones?

Then the grossest part of this message, and the reason I blocked him, as seen in the screenshot…

i’m curious what you think about the … um … close family relationships between some of the characters. if we were to marry someday, just how openminded would you be about what our family can do in the privacy of our home?

What? WHAT? What the WHAT?

Excuse me while I alert the police. What the hell are you even talking about? No. NO. Just NO.

He’s asking me if we had kids, if I’d be down with some good ol’ fashioned incest… BECAUSE I LIKE GAME OF THRONES, like 10 million other people in the country.

But it doesn’t stop there. I thought… surely, I must be misinterpreting him! I asked him if that was what he was talking about because if so, he’s messed up. And he wrote back, CALLING ME A HYPOCRITE.

I’m apparently a hypocrite because I read and watch Game of Thrones but I’m not down with incest or child-abuse. You read that right.

Blocked. Reported. How do I purge this from my memory?
